Final Inspiration...

My final will take place in the streets of Italy during the Italian Renaissance period, and feature a Commedia dell'arte acting troupe in the middle of performing for the crowded street of people.

I really want to work with the lighting of the scene and build the drama...
Im not exactly sure how I'm going to do that yet... maybe it will be at night or something.

But anyways,

My inspiration for the piece comes from Joseph Wright of Derby. I love the way he uses light to create such drama/suspense in his pieces. Also, the way he uses it to model the characters and objects that take place in the scene.

Well, I shall post more progress soon! :-)

  1. Wright, Caravaggio, Chiaroscuro -- good sources.

Can you title your references, in case someone wants to look them up?

The top one is Joseph Wright of Derby.

The middle one is by Caravaggio, and is in the church of San Luigi dei Francesi ("The French Church") in Rome. It is the rightmost painting in a chapel there: all of them are on the life of Saint Matthew, this one being entitled (pretty obvious title) The Martyrdom of St. Matthew, done in c 1600. (I often show slides of the leftmost one, The Calling of St. Matthew, the one with Jesus raising his arm and pointing the at Matthew, the money lender, who responds, pointing at his chest, "Who Me?" Great light in that one too, and great characters. The third painting, The Inspiration of St. Matthew has wonderful curving robes on the angel who appears to be advising - or even dictating - the saints gospel. I saw them in Rome and remember them vividly, although you get a lot from the reprodoctions).

The third one? Who did this?

    Good luck!
